Consumer Demand for Dairy

Health and nutrition have become increasingly important for consumers over recent years.

  • Bad eating habits and diseases caused by obesity contribute to 60 per cent of all deaths globally. (Source: Euromonitor 2005)
  • Already today, consumers are spending almost US$70 billion (around NZD 110 billion) globally on foods which are proven to have a health or nutritional benefit. (Source: Euromonitor 2005)
  • One in three women and one in five men over 50 will experience fractures caused by osteoporosis. (Source: The International Osteoporosis Foundation)

Convenience is also an important factor, with consumers looking for foods that are not only nutritious, but also quick and easy to prepare.

These are areas in which dairy can play a key role and manufacturers around the world are tailoring their products to suit the demands of their customers.

Dairy also has uses in other areas:

  • Ethanol produced from milk is used in solvents, food colourings and perfumes
  • Inhalation grade lactose is found as carriers or diluting agents in pharmaceuticals
  • Casein (a milk protein) is used in high quality paper, coatings for TV and computer screens and water-based paints and emulsions

All of this adds to the global demand for dairy.
